Thankful Turkeys

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I love that there is no pressure or expectations other than just being together. (Okay, perhaps just in my family, but none of us is competing for Top Chef either.)

For me, Thanksgiving is a time to slow down and focus on your blessings. To capitalize on this, I made Thankful Turkeys to help my students reflect on what they had to be thankful for.

Thankful Turkeys For Your Classroom

It is such a simple but effective lesson. It just requires copies of the pages, markers, scissors, and glue.

Students use the prewriting pages to think about who and what they are thankful for, then use the brainstorming to write a draft. Once they edit their essay, they make a final copy on a fall-themed piece of stationery. The students color their turkeys, writing what they are thankful for on the feathers and attach the essay beneath his wings.

It is such an easy lesson to differentiate, too. Older students can write paragraphs, while younger students could write complete sentences.

Also, a rubric is included for students and teachers to assess the writing, if desired.

Some years, I saved this lesson for the day before break – it can be a quick lesson. Other years, students worked through the writing process, and we hung their turkeys in the hallway for a week or two before break. Either way, families enjoy reading the essays once they are sent home.

More Thanksgiving-Themed Resources

I always had a Thanksgiving-Theme Day (or two) Thanksgiving week. We often had school Monday and Tuesday (and sometimes even Wednesday…) I definitely wanted students to keep learning, but I didn’t want to start a new unit or have grading to take home. Instead, I had students review skills with Thanksgiving-related lessons. These were some of my students’ favorite Thanksgiving-related lessons:
