Description
“This Commas in Addresses Unit meets 3rd Grade Language standards. The unit both introduces commas in addresses and reviews commas in dates, the greetings and closings of friendly letters, and in a series or list.
This unit includes activities to teach, practice, and assess students’ understanding of the proper use of commas.
Teaching Friendly Letter
First, teachers introduce the friendly letter format with a mentor text (not included). inductive activities. Students explore examples of a friendly letter to determination which parts are included. They then complete an anchor chart/notesheet on friendly letters.

Teaching Commas
Next, students learn about commas. They participate in an inductive activity, in which they analyze how commas are used. With a partner, they develop rules for commas.
After the activity, students watch a 6 minute video that explains the 4 commas rules taught in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade. After the video, they complete an anchor chart/notesheet on the comma rules.

Practice
Students practice using what they learned about commas. Teachers can give students an optional “”Comma Rules”” page to glue in the notebook as a reference. First, students analyze whether commas are used correctly or incorrectly. Next, they practice editing friendly letters. 5 letters are included. The letters tell a story. Teachers can choose to use all of the letters for practice, or save some for spiral review or reteaching.

Writing Center
A friendly letter activity is included for more practice with both letter format and comma rules. Teachers can use this activity in a center or as a whole group activity.

A multiple-choice assessment activity is included. The questions are formatted like a standardized test. This activity can be used as a formative assessment to check students’ understanding of comma rules.
