Description

Mystery Genre Case File Book Report Project

For this project, students only need paper and perhaps colors. A file folder to make the project is optional – students could fold a piece of paper instead. (Teachers could provide the file for students if desired.)

For the case file project, students will create a file on the mystery book. The file folder will contain a main character profile, suspect profiles, a plot file, red herring information (if applicable), and a book review of the novel.

This file includes:
1. a description of the traits of the mystery genre as well as book titles in the genre.
2. a detailed description of the Case File project requirements.
3. 5 printable forms for the project.
4. a checklist for students to use to make sure their project is complete.
5. a rubric.
6. an introductory activity page. (I use a Scooby-Doo cartoon to introduce students to the elements of mysteries. I included this in case you would like to do that as well, but you will need your own DVD.)

Class time will vary depending upon how much time the teacher gives students in class to work on their profile page.

For my students, we spend part of a class period in the library looking for books in the genre that are on their levels. Students select a book and I keep a record of the books selected.
Once everyone has a book selected, I give students 2 1/2 – 3 weeks to read and complete the project.

In addition, I take three – five days and have students present their books and projects. (I use this as an oral presentation grade.) I find it is better to do a few presentations at a time.
