Popcorn Volume: Exploring Volume & Dimension
This activity helps students explore the relationship between volume and dimension. Students will tape/glue paper rectangles and a square into cylinders, then fill them with popcorn kernels. Students expect the cylinders made from the same shapes to hold the same amount of kernels – but they don’t!
This is a terrific activity to complete around the holidays. Teachers just need a lot of unpopped popcorn kernels and a bowl for students to work in. Please note that this activity actually takes students a while to complete. It is much better if students work in partners.
This file includes a teacher page, a student worksheet, and templates for the shapes.
